Indian Landfills Among Top Global Methane Emitters, Study Reveals

CategoryDetails
Study OverviewA satellite-based global study identified Secunderabad and Mumbai landfills among top 25 methane-emitting waste sites in 2025. Conducted using Carbon Mapper satellite data, analyzed by UCLA's Stop Methane Project.
Key Findings- Analyzed 2,994 methane plumes from 707 global waste sites. - India has 2 sites in top 25, alongside Saudi Arabia and Turkey. - Chile and Brazil have the highest (3 sites each).
Methane's Impact- 86x more potent than CO₂ over 20 years. - Responsible for ~30% of global temperature rise post-Industrial Revolution. - Current levels 2.5x higher than pre-industrial (IEA data).
Emission Scale- Top landfills emit 3.6-7.5 tonnes/hour of methane. - 5 tonnes/hour ≈ emissions from 1M SUVs or a 500MW coal plant. - Ghazipur landfill previously recorded 400 tonnes/hour (2022).
